Event Details
Have you ever wondered how you can contribute to the safety and wellbeing of your community?
Want to explore approaches to community safety that don’t rely on law enforcement?
This workshop will introduce participants to the role of an Event Marshal and explore how community members can support safer, more welcoming events through de-escalation, relationship-building, communication, and community care.
Marshalling is a way to put the principle of “We Keep Us Safe” into practice. Rather than enforcing rules or policing others, marshals help create environments where people can gather, express themselves freely, and access support when needed.
Participants will learn about:
-Community safety and care
-De-escalation principles
-Conflict prevention and response
-Supporting event accessibility and inclusion
-Responding to challenging situations
-The role of marshals at community events
No previous experience is required.
About Guelph Students Against Austerity (GSAA):
Guelph Students Against Austerity (GSAA) is a grassroots organization that was born out of community response to cuts to post-secondary education and student supports. Since then, GSAA has evolved into an organization that seeks to address and educate about the intersections between austerity and broader social, economic, and environmental issues.
GSAA is a collective of activists and organizers committed to anti-capitalism, community solidarity, and collective liberation.
