Our July book pick is: Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto
(book content warning: death, food)

Published in 1988, Kitchen is an enchantingly original book that juxtaposes two tales about mothers, love, tragedy, and the power of the kitchen and home in the lives of a pair of free-spirited young women in contemporary Japan. Grieving, Mikage is taken in by her friend Yoichi and his mother (who is really his cross-dressing father) Eriko. As the three of them form an improvised family that soon weathers its own tragic losses, Yoshimoto spins a lovely, evocative tale with the kitchen and the comforts of home at its heart.

Register for our book club event here or email programming@outontheshelf.com before July 13 to get your free copy of the book to read. We have a limited number of spaces so register early! (Note: please return the book when the library opens again)

We can provide accommodations for accessibility needs (ie. audiobook, large print, etc)

Participants should expect casual conversations about literature and see friendly faces, understanding, respect, with no pressure in a laid-back environment.

Facilitators: Gilles, Melanie, and Griffin
